Humanist Response Guides

The purpose behind our Humanist Response Guides [HRG] is to help people ‘think for themselves’ and better understand some of the difficult conundrums that society is facing, not least those associated with trying to live a ‘good life’ in these challenging times and do something constructive about the threat posed by misinformation, untamed artificial intelligence and climate breakdown.

We have summarised below 'What's the Problem?' with the issues we are concerned about.

A number of humanist values — and truth in particular — are directly threatened by some aspects of AI systems, for example, hallucinating chatbots and the spread of Al slop. Another concern in the possible impact of AI on what it means to be ‘human’ and how we think — ingratiating ‘personal assistants’ are of particular concern, along with digital delusion and digital twinning (producing a digital replica of someone that can ‘think’ and write like they do and stand in for them). Clearly proposals on labelling and deceptive impersonation need to make allowance for satire / humour and legitimate anonymity.

Humankind has shown itself to be incapable of dealing effectively with the degradation or destruction of many of our world’s most important ecosystems, tackling biodiversity loss, or controlling greenhouse gas emissions.
